Sport Jackets

Tan Cotton Sport Coat

Like seersucker, cotton khaki was also created to be worn in hot and humid weather. First introduced in 1848 as uniforms for the British Cavalry in India to replace the traditional Scarlet Red wool jacket worn with white trousers, an ensemble that was both too hot for the climate, and very conspicuous. The new uniforms were made of light weight cotton for comfort, yet woven in a tight twill weave for durability. The cloth was dyed in light brown to blend with the environment. The term ‘Khaki” literally means “dusty” or dust from the soil in Persian. Adopted by the US Military in the early part of the 20th Century, cotton khaki trousers and eventually khaki suits and sport jackets would become popular in civilian wear after WW 11, and really take off in the 1950s again due their popularity with the collage Ivy League set.
